How do I apply to be a Rotary Youth Exchange Student in SCANEX?
SCANEX is a Rotary International Multi-District program that includes Rotary Districts from Southern California, Southern Nevada, Utah, Arizona, and Hawaii.
To apply to be a Rotary Youth Exchange student, you must contact your local Rotary Club. You can find your local Club at https://my.rotary.org/en/club-search.
Fees
The fees to be a Rotary Youth Exchange depends on your home Club. They may include participation fees (paid to the Rotary Club or District), plane fare, travel and health insurance, and visa processing fees. While on your exchange, you will be given a $100 USD/month stipend.
Students coming to SCANEX from another country do not pay fees to SCANEX, but to their home Club or District. School fees or tuition, if any, will be paid by the host Rotary Club. You will likely have to pay the fees for extra curricular activities (e.g., sports uniforms). Any Rotary sponsored trips, such as the end-of-the-year Train Tour (approx $3,750 USD) are optional, but will cost extra. You will receive more information about these trips in your inbound student handbook
Students going abroad will receive cost information from their host Rotary Club/District. This will likely include the cost of travel/health insurance. SCANEX accepts CISI Plan B insurance (see https://www.culturalinsurance.com/rotary/rotary_plan_options.asp for current costs), plane fare, and other costs, which would be explained by the sponsoring Rotary Club/District. SCANEX does not charge a fee for incoming students.
In accepting applications, SCANEX follows all relevant data protection and privacy laws. Your information will only be shared with our staff and host families who have been screened and vetted and have gone through appropriate training in handling confidential data.
What does a Rotary Youth Exchange Student do?
- Rotary Youth Exchange is a cultural understanding and peace program. We want our students to learn about life outside of their country of origin and in return allow others to learn about their culture. Rotary Youth Exchange students will learn to live Rotary’s motto of “Service Above Self.”
- While on exchange, you will be hosted by 1-4 host families–all volunteers!
- You will be expected to attend school and your visa will not allow you to have a job while in your host country.
- The exchange is for a full academic year and your visa will be valid for 12 months.
- Follow Rotary’s rules for exchange student conduct, including not using illegal drugs/alcohol, drive a motor vehicle, engage in sexual activity.
